Saṅkalpa सकंप

Sankalpa सकंप = San (truth) + Kalpa (the rule to be followed above all other rules)

A sankalpa indicates an intention formed by the heart and mind. It is a vow or commitment we make to support our truth. We can see it as a statement you call upon to remind you of your true nature and guide your choices through your yoga practice. The purpose of yoga practice is to use the body as a gateway to our personal freedom, freedom from pain and suffering, freedom from fears, and freedom to complete happiness. Sankalpa statement is designed to support such a purpose.

There are three steps to set your sankalpa.

  1. State a heartfelt desire or specific intention in words for you. Be very specific! For Example: “I will be attentive in every yoga class this semester.” Or a statement which is already in place. For example, “I am at peace with myself.” Or “I am healing.”

  2. Plant the seed of your sankalpa by repeatedly remembering it in order to strengthen your resolve.

  3. Nourish your resolve by taking specific action.

You might find various distractions, such as laziness or procrastination, prevent you from following through with your sankalpa. This is an internal struggle between your heartfelt intention and your old habits. Acknowledge that this, too, is part of the practice. Be steadfast and it will strengthen you along the way to your goal.
